ChatPDF Alternative That Reads PDFs Already Open
ChatPDF, Humata and AskYourPDF all start with an upload. Here is what changes when the PDF is read in the tab it is already open in.

ChatPDF, Humata and AskYourPDF share a shape: you go to their site, upload a document, and chat with it there. For a research paper you will spend an hour with, that is fine — the upload is a one-time cost and you get a workspace built for the job.
For the PDF that is already open in your browser tab, it is three steps you did not need. Download it, find it, upload it, wait, then read the answer somewhere other than the document.
The upload question
There is a second reason the distinction matters, and it is not convenience.
Uploading a document sends it to someone's server. For a public paper, nobody cares. For an invoice, a contract, an internal report, or anything a client sent you, "which service now has a copy of this" is a real question with a real answer — and it is a question you have to ask every single time.
Reading the document in the tab it is already open in does not make that question disappear entirely; the text still has to reach a model to be summarized. It does remove the step where a full copy of the file is stored under someone else's account.

Where the upload tools are clearly better
Be honest about this: if you are working across twenty papers and want to ask a question that spans all of them, a dedicated PDF workspace with a library and cross-document search is the right tool and Mentorina is not a substitute. Same if you need the documents to persist somewhere you can search next month.

What does not work
State this before you install, not after:
- Scanned PDFs. If the pages are images with no selectable text, there is nothing to read. No OCR.
- Password-protected files.
- One-time download links and PDFs generated after a form submission — anything that cannot be fetched a second time.
- Local files need Chrome's file access permission turned on for the extension.
Everything else — the papers, the manuals, the reports, the specs you open twenty times a week — works as it is.
The part that is not about PDFs
The reason to use one panel for documents is usually that you are not only reading documents. The same panel summarizes the YouTube lecture that the paper came from, the article that cited it, and the Netflix episode you watch afterwards. That is the actual argument, and it is worth more than the saved upload step.
