summarize.tech is the least complicated thing in this category. You paste a YouTube URL into a box on a website and you get a summary broken into time ranges. No extension to install, no account for basic use, nothing to configure. BibiGPT works on a similar paste-a-link model with a wider set of supported sources.
For "I need the gist of this video and I am never coming back", that is genuinely hard to beat. Do not switch away from it out of a sense that you should be using something more sophisticated.
What the paste-a-link model costs
You leave the video to read about the video. The summary is on a different site from the thing it describes. The timestamps are text, not controls — reading "12:40" tells you where to go, and you go there by hand.
There is no conversation. You get a summary. If it does not answer your actual question, your options are to re-read it or watch the video. There is nothing to ask.
It stops at YouTube. A URL box needs a public URL. The PDF open in your tab does not have one that a third-party site can fetch, and neither does a Netflix episode.

The difference in practice is what happens after the summary. On a paste-a-link tool, the summary is the end of the interaction. In a panel, it is the start of one: read the summary, click 12:40, watch the part that matters, come back and ask what the number they mentioned was.
When to stay put
- One-off videos, a few times a month.
- You cannot or will not install a browser extension.
- You want a URL you can send to someone else.

When the panel is worth the install
When summarizing stops being an occasional errand and becomes how you get through material.
