"YouTube Summary with ChatGPT & Claude" is one of the most-installed summarizer extensions there is, and its core move is clever: it grabs the video transcript, opens ChatGPT in a new tab, and pastes it in with a prompt. You get a summary using whatever plan you already pay for. Glasp, the company behind it, also builds a highlighting and social-notes product on top.
It works. The friction is structural, not accidental.
The round trip
Every summary is a tab switch. Transcript out, prompt in, answer in a different window from the video it describes. If you want to ask a follow-up — "what did they say about pricing?" — you are asking it in a chat that has no idea the video is still playing on the other tab, and clicking a timestamp in the answer does nothing, because ChatGPT cannot drive the YouTube player.
For one summary a week that is fine. For a habit it is a lot of context switching.

That last row cuts both ways and is worth being honest about. If you already pay for ChatGPT Plus, Glasp's extension effectively costs nothing extra. Mentorina has its own free tier and paid plans, which is a second subscription. Whether that is worth it depends entirely on how often you do this.
Where the copy-paste approach genuinely wins
- You want the raw transcript to keep, not a summary.
- You have a specific prompt you like and want full control over it.
- You are already deep in Glasp's highlighting and notes workflow.
- You want a model Mentorina does not use.
None of those are edge cases. If any describe you, stay where you are.
Where it does not
The moment you want to ask three questions in a row about a video while it is still on screen, the tab round trip stops being a minor annoyance. Same when the thing you want summarized is a PDF or an episode, which the transcript-export approach cannot reach at all.
Mentorina keeps the conversation on the page: ask, get an answer, click a timestamp, jump there, ask again. Come back to the same video tomorrow and the conversation is still there.
